Random Dozen Week #14

The internet is very sketchy due to a thunderstorm so I'm going to try and answer the Random Dozen questions and post before it quits altogether.

1. Which Wizard of Oz character are you most like? The cowardly lion. I'm not just afraid of heights, I'm paralyzed by them.

2. When you're deciding what you're going to wear each morning, which item do you select first? Why? Pants (or capris). No particular reason, it's just how I operate.

3. What kind of animal do you think the world could live without? Do insects count? I'd do away with the whole lot of 'em.

4. How many Christmas trees are in your home? One. Considering that my husband would be happy if we set out a dish of Christmas candy and called it good, I'm grateful for that one tree.

5. Would you prefer to be emotionless if it mean you didn't have to feel a heartbreak? Ummm, no.

6. Do you ever experience holiday let-down or depression? How about holiday suppression? (Trying to keep the merry making to a minimum.)

7. Do you like Michael Jackson's music? The early years. Absolutely adored the Jackson Five. Some of his later stuff is okay.

8. Why is it that we never judge people who have their teeth fixed for cosmetic reasons, but every other cosmetic procedure has a stigma? Good dental care -- including cosmetic work -- seems like more of an investment; them choppers come in handy when it's time to chow down! But actually cosmetic surgery is much more widely accepted here: "Estimates say that 1 in 30 Argentines has gone under the knife, making surgeons here some of the most experienced on the globe." That's a quote from an article about a former Miss Argentina who died Sunday after buttock reduction surgery.
[The Argentine affection for plastic surgery is one cultural aspect I won't be adapting to; this southern girl will continue to proudly wear the wrinkles God gave her.]

9. Enjoy horseback riding? Used to but not anymore. Scoliosis plus a little arthritis thrown in for good measure make riding not-so-fun any more. In junior high I rode almost every Saturday and for a brief and happy time owned my own horse, Pecos.

10. Shoes--practical or stylish? Just last night while we were window shopping in Belgrano I commented that I love looking at pretty shoes and admiring them, I just don't like them on my feet. There it's ALL about comfort! I brought three pair of new Rebok Princesses to Argentina with me, one for each year of this first term. I'll restock on furlough for the next term.

11. What was the name of your first pet? Feel free to post a pic. Peewee was a cockapoo, black and shaggy and never properly groomed. Don't have a photo but just imagine a giant black dust mop.

12. What percentage of your Christmas shopping is done? Zero.

I'd love to stay and chat but I want to get this posted while I can. Or hope I can.

Check out Lid's place to see how others answered this week's questions.

Yeah...mosquitos...I know they're good for something but I don't know what that is.

I agree with #8-good dental care is an investment.

Happy Wednesday...or is it Thursday there?

Cowardly Lion? Really? I never would have guess that one. You're so brave in your missionary work and travels. I think you are VERY brave. Blessings, SusanD

yep, don't know of a bug I would like to keep.

this cracked me up:

"them choppers come in handy when it's time to chow down!"

from a fellow foodie...we need them choppers!!! :)

I get later and later on the christmas shopping the older I get.

have fun with your company!

*High FIVE!* I haven't done any Christmas shopping either! And my husband is much like yours - he'd be happy if we cancelled Christmas altogether! (FUN, aren't they?)

I love LOOKING at shoes too! I have great admiration for cute and SNAZZY shoes... but they aren't getting on my feet! If they managed to make it into my closet it would be just so I could look at them from time to time! LOL! (and so they don't!)

Didn't think these would make me chuckle but #4 reminded me of why you love me, I have some things in common with Ivan (no tree this year, but lots of cookies).
#8 made me snort with laughter, buttock reduction surgery?
As to shoes... let's just say a new pair of heels has joined the practical shoes in my closet...don't tell Alan.

I am a cowardly lion when it comes to heights too.

Another vote for insects...I don't think any of us like them. ha!

We had a cockapoo when I was a child. Such fun dogs.

Again, fun information about you, bugs, pets, Christmas! How timely and interesting was that article! I'll remember not to have buttock reduction ;) Growing up I would have worried about that, now 'ghetto booties' are in!

I like the minimal merry making! :) Funny that I call my little girl peewee! Oh well.

You are wise to embrace only some of the culture of your host country! And you probably have experienced some really icky bugs there, so you and I are on the same page for insects!

We only have one tree also, and if I don't get busy on it soon. I will be called scrooge again.

you have just about talked me into a SURPRISE visit there! My boss just returned from visiting her college age daughter who is staying with a host home. She took traditional Thanksgiving food with her and prepared it best as she could there. She also talked about the plastic surgery phenomenon. Thanks for the cheer up.

How interesting about plastic surgery. I would never have imagined it. But I did know that many Argentines spend a huge proportion of their income on aesthetics, so I guess that may be the explanation. I remember seeing people dressed to the latest fashion get of the bus and walk to their rundown, sometimes even shabby, house.
